Our history

In May of 2019, the northern lights blew fresh life into an old building rich with history. Two years of remodeling revitalized a once booming social establishment, becoming Aurora Borealis.

In the early 1900’s the building began as a ride and dine business; a horse stable where patrons could meander the many trails and dirt roads on horseback and end the day with a fine dining experience at the restaurant. Earl Coffrin, a (businessman?) bankrolled this project with money he made from bootlegging.

In 1936, the building went up for sale and reopened as the Charmland, a classic roadhouse where people came to eat, drink and dance. Unfortunately, the restaurant quickly went out of business and a prominent Seattle restauranteur, Chef Costa, swooped in to save the day. With friends such as Harry Truman and Bing Crosby as well as a strong following in the greater Seattle area, Costa reinvigorated the business and brought it back to popularity.

For the next 30 years, the restaurant thrived under Costa’s leadership. Eventually, it transformed into Herb’s Bavarian Inn, The Barn Door, and lastly as the Drift On Inn. From horse stable to speakeasy to dancehall and restaurant and casino, the historical Shoreline establishment finally welcomed Aurora Borealis in the spring of 2019. Aurora Borealis is a locally-owned, family friendly restaurant serving American style comfort food, featuring all-day breakfast, scratch-made lunch and dinner, as well as world class entertainment. We’re proud to bring a fresh and clean ambiance to Shoreline.
